Jaw & Chin Feminization FAQ
A jaw’s shape isn’t inherently masculine or feminine—it’s how it fits with the rest of the face. Jaw and chin feminization procedures can help create a softer, rounded jawline and a proportionate chin can enhance femininity.
Jaw and chin feminization/contouring is a deeply personal decision, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. This page covers frequently asked questions about the procedure, recovery, costs, and how our team ensures a smooth experience. Our goal is to provide clear, comprehensive information so you can move forward with confidence.
Should I get jaw and/or chin contouring surgery?
Jaw and chin contouring may be worth considering if these features are a significant source of dysphoria. While testosterone exposure during puberty can make the jaw more angular and the chin thicker, these changes vary from person to person.
A wider, more square jawline or an overly tall chin can contribute to a more masculine appearance. This surgery can help create a softer, more feminine facial profile tailored to your unique features.
What method do you use for Jaw/Chin contour?
At Catalyst Surgical, we use the JawContour method developed by Facialteam.
We use a 3D CT scan to plan jaw and chin contouring with precision. A custom 3D-printed cutting guide, made from biocompatible resin, ensures accuracy and prevents errors during surgery.
Incisions are made inside the mouth to avoid visible scars while protecting sensory nerves. We use an ultrasonic saw, which cuts only bone, preserving soft tissues. After reshaping the jawbone, a high-speed burr smooths contours for a refined look.
If needed, additional chin adjustments like advancement for better projection are performed at this stage.
Recovery
Immediately After Surgery: You’ll stay overnight for observation and receive a chin strap for support. Eating is possible but may be challenging at first.
- Day 1: A lymphatic drainage session helps reduce swelling, followed by a review of post-op care before you head home.
- Week 1: A second lymphatic drainage session and incision check. Swelling will be significant and can persist for up to a year, though most fades within 2-3 months.
- Activity Restrictions: Light activity like brisk walking is recommended. Avoid intense exercise for 6-8 weeks to prevent excess swelling.
- Follow-Ups: We see patients at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, with additional visits as needed.
Healing is gradual—your results will continue refining over the first year as soft tissues adjust to your new facial structure.
